Keep Portland Weird

Several people have asked me how I liked Portland and what it’s like there. The simplest way to describe Portland is to say that Portland is weird.

I’m not the only one who thinks Portland is weird. Portlanders pride themselves in being weird. This isn’t just a random phrase written on this building, it’s also a bumper sticker and a t-shirt. You see this phrase everywhere in Portland.

Have you heard of the show Portlandia? There are 26 clips of Portlandia on Hulu, and almost every single one is worth watching. It’s hilarious. You might think it’s an exaggerated description of Portland, but I assure you it is not. When Peter and I first went to Portland for our house-hunting trip, we came away feeling exactly as described in I Dream of the 90’s. It couldn’t have been more different from northern New Jersey.

I’m not sure I ever really adjusted to Portland and felt like I “fit” there. BUT I did learn to appreciate Portland for what it is. There are things to enjoy about Portland, and I’m glad I discovered them, but I’m also glad to be an east-coaster again.

That reminds me of Austin Texas. They are proud about being weird too.
